Bake cookies. Declare war.

Start with your favorite homemade sugar cookies, then make cooked Swiss meringue for the battle. One batch uses 4 large egg whites, 1 cup sugar, ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar, optional vanilla, and a little food coloring. The cookies are dessert; the fluff is the ammo. Allow 2–3 hours for baking, cooling, setup, play and cleanup. The $15–$35 ingredient allowance assumes you already own a mixer, thermometer, bowls and hose.

01 · THE ROUTE

  1. Bake your favorite sugar cookies and let them cool. Keep the cookie tray away from the battle zone.
  2. For each fluff batch, combine 4 large egg whites and 1 cup sugar in a clean heatproof bowl. Save the yolks for another recipe.
  3. Set the bowl above gently simmering water without touching it. Whisk until a food thermometer reads 160°F; do not use raw whipped egg whites.
  4. Remove from heat, add ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar and optional vanilla, then beat with an electric mixer until cool, glossy and fluffy.
  5. Divide into bowls and gently fold in a little pastel food coloring. Keep refrigerated until playtime; heat and humidity can soften the peaks.
  6. Agree on willing participants, allergies, face-free throws and a grass-only play zone. Scoop soft handfuls—no containers or hard projectiles.
  7. Stop the battle before turning on sprinklers or the hose. Rinse promptly, wash clothing and check for sticky residue. Eat the untouched cookies, not fluff collected from the ground.

02 · BEFORE YOU START

  1. Check the pantry and equipment before shopping.
  2. Invite willing accomplices and check egg allergies first.

BACKYARD GAME PLAN

Prep & cleanup tips.

Cookies first. Fluff at playtime. Sprinklers afterward.
  1. THE PREP CHECK · Check the pantry and equipment before shopping. · Invite willing accomplices and check egg allergies first.
  2. THE LEVERAGE · Make the cooked egg-white fluff close to playtime and keep it chilled until everyone is ready. Heat and humidity can soften it; whip only what you plan to use that afternoon.
  3. THE COST CHECK · The $15–$35 allowance covers ingredients when you already own the mixer, thermometer and bowls. Check your pantry first and use just a little pastel coloring to limit staining.
  4. THE HANDLER MOVE · Stop the battle before turning on sprinklers or the hose. Rinse promptly, wash clothing and check for sticky residue. Eat the untouched cookies, not fluff collected from the ground.

03 · BRING THIS

  1. Egg whites, sugar, cream of tartar and pastel food coloring
  2. Electric mixer, clean bowls and food thermometer
  3. Sugar-cookie ingredients and baking tray
  4. Old clothes, towels, hose or sprinklers
HEADS UPFluff itself makes a trampoline slippery even with sprinklers off: keep the battle on grass. Avoid eyes and faces; supervise children and keep pets out. Egg allergies still apply after cooking. Strong dyes can stain, and sugary meringue may need more than one rinse. Keep food chilled; discard after 2 hours outdoors, or 1 hour above 90°F.
